Holly Cinnamon — one of our own — is stepping into the spotlight, not as a recording artist this time, but as Elizabeth: a funny, particular woman from 1974 whose story hits closer to home than you might expect.

Theatre East's U.S. premiere of An Ordinary Afternoon in 1974, written by Canadian playwright Daniel MacIvor and directed by Judson Jones, opened this week at Court Square Theater in Long Island City. Holly stars opposite Carla Briscoe (Blue Caprice, Succession) in what promises to be a sharp, joyful, irreverent two-hander about two longtime friends revisiting their shared past — and refusing to let it stay quiet.

MacIvor is a titan of Canadian theatre — a Governor General's Literary Award, Siminovitch Prize, Obie Award, and GLAAD Award winner whose work has been translated into eight languages. This is the play's first time on an American stage, and Theatre East, a company dedicated to new works of social relevance, is the perfect home for it. The production is described as "bold, irreverent, and full of joy" — a celebration of women claiming their space, their voices, and their extraordinary power.

You already know Holly as a singer-songwriter and queer music producer behind the indie label Female Gayze Music, a Stonewall Inn regular, and a screen presence in everything from Marvel's Daredevil to Succession. Now add Off-Off-Broadway leading lady to that list.
